Newsletter NUMBER 7

Welcome to the latest offering from my strange and convoluted mind.  Its been a while since we’ve had a newsletter out.  Summer proved to be a major challenge not only at SBR but also at the Links Cycles Stores. The summer season saw the big yellow van everywhere.  We sponsored and supported the Age Swim series as well as the revamped and better Protiviti Triathlon Series.  We even reared our heads at the Gaterade Series. Amongst all that we took not only the shop on the road but also had a full men’s pro team in the Jayco Bay Classic Criterium series.  The boys who came from all over Australia and even New Zealand put on a great show, and although the overall race results were not as good as expected all of us learned a heap and will be better prepared next year.

Part time worker Robin Tullett (of Triathlete fame) raised more than a few eyebrows when he entered the open catergory as the oldest man in the field (by 12 years) and then had the highest results in not only our team but even managed to go head to head with Robbie McEwen on the final days racing.

It just goes to show that age and experience will sometimes win out over youthful exuberance.

Protiviti Triathlon Series

The first series by new owners of the series has been run and won, congratulations to Terry from Start to Finish Events who is the new face behind the series.  In excess of six hundred competitors fronted for each of the seven races. The State titles at Geelong saw a killer day with the temperatures in excess of 30 degrees by race start. Our pre season open water swim sessions seemed to have paid off with many competitors new to the sport being a lot better prepared for the race season having a lot less concern and trepidation about that race start  than in the past.

CUSTOM BIKE OF THE WEEK

This was a hard call, as we only has $2300.00 to work with but needed a serious build to do everything from training to racing triathlons.

Kelly wasn’t impressed with the bikes that she had seen to date, so we measured her up and showed her some framesets and settled on what you can see.

We used a 51cm Cervelo Dual as the chassis, this frame comes as a time trial specific  bike with bullhorns and bar con shifters and retailed for $3300.00, this frame is great as it has a slightly steeper seat tube angle with a corresponding shorter top tube, therefore is very versatile.  We used a 9 speed 105 groupset, with Bontrager Select wheels, Vittoria colour matched Rubino tyres, matched bar tape and a ladies comfort saddle.

Orbea Bikes

Both SBR and Links Cycles now stock the full range of Orbea bikes and accessories. Orbea is a long established Spanish company that builds and supplies a full range of Road, tri, mtb and hybrid style bikes on a global basis.  All mid and upper end road bikes are hand painted with all logos being hand applied by stencil, this results in an individual and quality finish of all paint jobs. All frames have a lifetime warranty for the original purchaser, and road bike models start at $1099.00.

We now have a complete and fully funky Orbea Ordu at SBR so if you are in the market for a world beating time trial specific bike and are of a normal size 5’8” to 5’11’ bring your pedals and shoes and come for a test ride.

We are also lucky to have the first of the 2007 bikes that will be offered to Australian customers in the Orbea Opal, only three bikes are available at the moment, one is gone and we have a 54cm and a 57cm left.  So if you want something a bit different then this may be for you.  The Opal has been available in the USA for the last six months and has received rave reviews.  The frame uses an Onix mold (so it is not as rounded in appearance as the flagship Orca) but uses the revolutionary M-30 carbon fiber instead of the T-700 that results in a frame slightly lighter than the Orca but is 20% stiffer, we are talking forth generation super high modulus carbon fiber here people.

THE END OF AN ERA

After a long history that has seen 732 Burke Road trade under many names as a bike shop the end is nigh. We have had Camberwell Cycles, Jones Cycles and Burke Road Cycles

and finally Links Cycles trade at that address.

After four years even we are calling it quits, lack or parking, general access, unrealistic rent prices and lower than projected sales figures have forced me to make the decision to deliver the killing blow.

To that end after over 4 years trading as Links Cycles the store will cease trading on Sunday 18th June 2006, we have some great closing down specials with some one of clearance lines so why not drop in and have a look.

Ex hire and sample wetsuit clearance
